How to become MCS certified

The steps, the cost and the 2026 changes for heat pump installers, plus the umbrella route if you would rather skip the paperwork for now.

Becoming MCS certified means getting your business approved to install heat pumps to the recognised UK standard, so the work you do can claim the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. In short: you evidence the right qualifications and insurance, appoint a technical lead, join a consumer code, then pass an assessment with a certification body. Get through that, and you can certify your own installs.

It is a real commitment of time and money, and 2026 has changed some of what is involved. Here is the full picture: the steps, what it costs, how long it takes, and the alternative route if certifying yourself is not the right move for your business yet.

The short answer

To become MCS certified for heat pumps you need a Nominated Technical Person with the right heat pump and low-temperature heating design qualifications, membership of an MCS-approved consumer code, the correct insurance (including a workmanship warranty), and sign-off from an MCS certification body after they assess your work. The process usually takes a few weeks to a few months and costs most small installers somewhere in the low thousands in the first year. Once certified, you can design, install and certify grant-eligible heat pump jobs under your own accreditation.

Why MCS certification matters for heat pump work

Without it, the grant is off the table. To claim the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant on a heat pump in England and Wales, the install has to be carried out by an MCS-certified installer. That grant is worth £7,500 towards an air source or ground source heat pump, and it is what makes most jobs affordable for the homeowner. From 21 July 2026, off-gas-grid homes replacing oil or LPG can claim an uplifted £9,000 until the end of March 2027, so the pipeline of grant-backed work in rural areas is set to grow.

In practice, MCS certification is the gate to grant-eligible heat pump work. Getting your own certification is one way through that gate. Working under an umbrella is the other, which we come back to at the end.

How to become MCS certified: the steps

The exact order varies a little by certification body, but every route covers the same ground.

  1. Get the right qualifications. You need to be able to evidence competence in heat pump installation and in low-temperature heating system design. For most engineers that means recognised Level 3 qualifications in air source heat pump installation and in heat pump system or low-temperature heating design. MCS has an approved-training finder to help you locate courses near you.

  2. Appoint a Nominated Technical Person. MCS needs a named individual responsible for the design, installation, commissioning and handover of the technology you are certifying for. This is your technical lead, and their competence is reassessed on a set cycle, so it is a standing responsibility, not a one-off.

  3. Join an MCS-approved consumer code. You cannot currently register as an MCS installer without belonging to a consumer code such as HIES, RECC or the Consumer Code for Home Built Homes. The code protects the homeowner's deposit and gives them recourse, which is part of what the MCS badge signals (this requirement is being relaxed in late 2026).

  4. Get the right insurance. Standard public liability is not enough on its own. Because you are designing the system, you need professional indemnity cover, and you must be able to provide an insurance-backed guarantee that stands behind your workmanship for the warranty period.

  5. Choose a certification body and apply. MCS itself does not certify you; approved certification bodies do (NICEIC, NAPIT, OFTEC and others). You apply, submit your evidence, and pay the body's fees.

  6. Pass your assessment. The certification body reviews your documentation and assesses your work, historically through an early installation audit. Under the redeveloped scheme this leans harder on the quality of what you deliver on site, not just the paperwork behind it.

  7. Register and start certifying. Once approved, you can register your installs on the MCS database, issue MCS certificates, and apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme on eligible jobs.

What does MCS certification cost?

Budget in the low thousands for year one, then a smaller recurring cost after that. The spend splits across certification body fees, your consumer code membership, insurance, any training you still need, and the annual surveillance audit that keeps your certification live. Most small installers land somewhere between roughly £1,000 and £5,000 in the first year depending on the certification body, the technologies you cover and how much training you already hold. These figures move, so treat them as a guide and confirm current fees with your chosen certification body before you commit.

How long does it take?

Anywhere from two to six few months. The variable is usually you, not the certification body: gathering qualifications, lining up insurance and a consumer code, and getting a first install ready to assess is where the time goes. If your paperwork and training are already in order, it moves faster.

What is changing in 2026?

MCS is moving installers onto a redeveloped scheme through 2026, in a phased rollout. Your certification body contacts you when it is your turn to move across. Two shifts matter most. First, the emphasis moves from quality-management-system paperwork towards the quality you actually deliver on site. Second, there is a workmanship warranty requirement covering the installs you carry out. The direction of travel is clear: less filing, more proof that the job on the ground is done well.

The grant side has moved too. From earlier in 2026 the Boiler Upgrade Scheme dropped its EPC requirement, was extended to 2030, and brought air-to-air heat pumps in at £2,500. Air-to-air is not claimable yet: no product holds MCS certification, and certification is not expected before late 2026. So the grant-backed work is not a short-term spike; it is a market with years to run.

Is there help with the cost?

If you install in Scotland, possibly. The MCS Certification Fund, run by Energy Saving Trust, covers 75% of certification fees up to £1,000 for eligible installers working towards heat pump certification. To qualify you must be an SME, have a registered office in Scotland, carry out heating installations in Scotland, and not already hold MCS certification for a heat pump technology. It runs until March 2027 or until the money runs out. There is no equivalent England-and-Wales fund at the time of writing, so check current schemes before you assume support is available.

What if certifying yourself is not the right step yet?

You do not have to be MCS certified to take on grant-eligible heat pump work. You can install under an MCS umbrella instead, where the install is certified under another company's accreditation while you do the work on the tools. It is a way to take on heat pump jobs now, keep the grant on the table, and decide later whether your own certification is worth it. It is worth reading what an MCS umbrella scheme is before you weigh the two routes against each other.
