Most likely, yes. A major government-backed study by the Energy Systems Catapult found no type or age of UK home unsuitable for a heat pump, as long as it’s designed and installed correctly — from Victorian terraces to 1960s flats. The main things your home needs are some outdoor space for the unit and room indoors for a hot water cylinder, and it suits owners and landlords alike. The only way to know for certain what’s right for your home is a survey.

We match you with an experienced local installer who’s been vetted against our installation standards, so you’ve got someone we trust in your home. Every install is MCS-certified, backed by our own certification — which means it meets the recognised industry standard and qualifies for the government grant. Your installer is chosen to suit your home and your project.

The installation itself usually takes a few days, depending on your home and the complexity of your system. Most of that is fitting the heat pump, cylinder and any pipework, and we plan it to keep disruption to a minimum — we always aim to make sure you’re not left without hot water, though your heating may be off for a short period on more complex jobs. The wider process — survey, design and scheduling — takes a little longer, and we’ll give you clear dates so you always know what’s happening and when.

There’s no fixed deadline, but our advice is to be proactive — judge it by the condition of your boiler, not the calendar. If yours is getting on, breaking down often, or facing a pricey repair, it’s worth weighing up a replacement rather than patching it again, and planning the switch rather than waiting for it to let you down in the depths of winter. The best time to change your system is outside the heating season, when you’re not depending on it day to day. It’s also worth factoring in the grants and subsidies available to you: these can change over time and make a real difference to the cost, so they’re worth understanding while you plan. And it’s the natural moment to consider a heat pump — rather than a like-for-like swap, you can put the money into the way the homes of the future are being heated.
