A heat pump draws warmth from the outside air, concentrates it, and uses it to heat your home and hot water — think of it as a fridge working in reverse. There's usable warmth in the air even when it's cold outside, so a heat pump keeps working through winter. And because it moves heat rather than burning fuel to make it, it does the job with far less energy than a gas boiler.

No — a modern, well-sited heat pump is quiet. It produces a low hum rather than the noise of a boiler firing up: no combustion, no flames, just a fan and a compressor running gently outside. Getting the placement right is part of every proper MCS install, which keeps any sound unobtrusive for you and your neighbours.

No — it's a myth that you need a whole new set of radiators or underfloor heating. In most homes your existing radiators will do the job, because a heat pump is designed to work with them. Where a few are upsized, that's a good thing: bigger radiators let the system run at a lower, more efficient temperature, so you get gentler, more even warmth and lower running costs. And if your heating is getting on a bit, updating any radiators at the same time as your heat pump is often the cost-effective way to do it — one project rather than two, and they qualify for 0% VAT as part of a clean energy upgrade. Your survey will show exactly what (if anything) your home needs.

It depends on what matters most to you. On comfort, a heat pump is generally the better choice — it keeps your home at a steady, even temperature all year, rather than the peaks and lulls of a boiler. It’s also far more efficient, giving out three to four units of heat for every unit of energy it uses, where even an A-rated gas boiler manages around 90% — so if efficiency matters to you, the heat pump is the clear winner. The trade-off is some one-off disruption while your system is brought up to modern spec.

Running costs depend on your system, how you like to heat your home, and your tariff, so an accurate estimate needs a full home survey — you’ll find that detail in your quote.

Most homes in England and Wales are eligible. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives you £7,500 towards an air source or ground source heat pump, and if your home is off the gas grid and currently runs on oil or LPG, that rises to up to £9,000. Eligibility is set by Ofgem, who run the scheme — you can check the full criteria on gov.uk. You’ll need an MCS-certified install to qualify, which is exactly how we do it, and we apply for the grant on your behalf, so it’s deducted from your cost rather than something you claim back.
